Ian McShane has the best eyes on television–they turn from a mischievous twinkle to a baleful, heart-stopping glare in an instant. McShane achieved fame in the U.S. as foul-mouthed saloon owner Al Swearengen on Deadwood, but long before then he’d made his mark as lovable but slippery antiqus dealer Lovejoy, whose gift for sifting tru articles from false is matched only by his personal magnetism–for trouble. The second season of this British series beings with Lovejoy in prison for transporting stolen goods. Naturally, he’d been set up, and the episode darts back and forth in time as Lovejoy and his compatriots–boozy partner Tinker (Dudley Sutton), resentful flunky Eric (Chris Jury), and the woman Lovejoy wishes was more than a friend, Lady Jane (Phyllis Logan)–figure out the who, what, and how of the con game. Though the show is best categorized as a mystery, only a few episodes feature any serious violence, and only one is a murder mystery (with a dead body in a suit of medieval armor). At its best, Lovejoy is about trickery and human weakness. Lovejoy helps a disinherited brother take revenge on his greedy sibling; a collection of classic pornography may belong to a girls’ school; a wandering artist seduces lonely housewives by doing paintings of their cottages. When there is gunplay–as when a French policeman is killed by thieves who strip homes of their architectural features–it feels a bit overdone, a bit showy. Far more compelling are the subtle conflicts and dramas, such as when Lovejoy gently forces an elderly woman to admit her silver bowls aren’t worth what she claimed. Both writing and direction have sharpened in this second season: Plots are twistier, characters better developed, the pace more sprightly, and McShane seems gloriously at ease with unscrupulous alter-ego. In addition to twelve excellent episodes (including the two-part season finale, featuring Linda Gray from Dallas), this box set has two charming interviews with McShane, one made for the dvd release and one from a 1991 British talk show, conducted when the series was aired. Lovejoy features an abundance of vaguly familiar character actors as gust starts, including Brian Blessed (Flash Gordon), Patrick Malahide (The Singing Detective), and Tom Wilkinson (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). –Bret Fetzer

As in the earlier episodes, the storytelling is spotty at best, with the filmmakers devoting too much time to long and ultimately pointless conversations. In episode 6, Jinto and Lafiel dine with the sister of Baron Febdash, whom they killed three years earlier. All three participants are uncomfortable, a feeling the viewer is likely to share. Neither the discussions of dinner menus or the arguments about old relationships among the Abh commanders communicate the urgency and importance the approaching battle should warrant. Some elaborate CG battle scenes spice up some of the other episodes, but they aren’t particularly well-choreographed or exciting. From the early 1960s right up to the death-blow wielded by The Meese Commission, anything went on 42nd Street in New York City. Porno guys got cheap multi-year leases on most of ” The Deuce” and surrounding blocks. Formerly unrentable retail stores became “storefront theaters.” A plywood partition was built to house the projector, the back wall was painted white or a sheet hung up, a few dozen folding chairs were lined up, and the windows were blacked out. Usually a window had something on it to entice you in – a painted silhoutte of a naked woman or a glaring cheap sign, framed out in yellow light bulbs, proclaiming “XXX Movies.” Now, After Hours Cinema and yours truly, 42nd Street Pete, are going to give you the storefront theater viewing experience. But we can only show you this collection of classic films, painfully restored from their original grimy elements.

Troma Films’ Toxic Avenger series shows its lack of legs with the second sequl to its 1985 hit. Despite a typically absurd premise, which has Toxie battling Satan to save his hometown of Tromaville, the film lacks the go-for-broke gags and gore that made the first two films such guilty pleasures. Part of the reason for this may be that the movie was culled from footage shot for The Toxic Avenger, Part II; Troma heads Lloyd Kaufman (who also helmed the feature) and Michael Herz simply stitched together Part III from the loose ends. While haphazard construction is part of the charm of Troma’s films, the relatively high quality of the Toxic Avenger series raised the bar, and the slapdash nature of Part III is more of a disappointment than a campy source of humor. Tru to their nature, Troma disregarded the drubbing this film received and completed a fourth entry, Citizen Toxie. –Paul Gaita

A visually sumptuous period piece from Thailand, The King Maker is also, for better or worse, an old-fashioned adventure movie, complete with exotic locations, royal intrigu, and plenty of swashbuckling and derring-do. Former UK boxer Gary Stretch (Dead Man’s Shoes) is top-billed among a largely Thai cast as a 16th-century Portuguse man of action who sets sail to find his father’s killer, but instead finds himself in the employ of the king of Thailand. Treachery involving the qUn and a manipulative Portuguse ex-pat (John Rhys-Davies from The Lord of the Rings) soon puts Stretch’s life and romance with Rhys-Davies’ daughter (former Miss World Cindy Burbridge) in serious jeopardy. The Thai locations are gorgeous, and director Lek Kitiparaporn doesn’t shy away from battle scenes or action set pieces, but the Asian actors struggle mightily with their English dialogu (this is only the third Thai film shot in English since the ’40s), which is frankly purple enough to cause problems for those who call it their native tongu. The script as a whole is too sudsy and mawkish to keep action fans happy, and those looking for a historical romance will be turned off by the vigorous violence. The King Maker is perhaps best enjoyed by those with a taste for films with an Asian setting, or viewers looking for diversion and little else. — Paul Gaita

Jack Parr kept a low public profile after turning over the reigns of The Tonight Show to Johnny Carson in 1962. Thus, his passing in January 2004, did not receive nearly the attention it deserved. The Jack Paar Collection restores the legacy of the talk-show pioneer who brought the art of conversation to the barren landscape of late-night television. But, I kid you not, it is an indispensable time capsule that preserves appearances and performances by politicians, personalities, and entertainers who shaped the 20th century. And Robert Goulet, too. Disc 1 of this three-disc set is an appreciation of Paar that combines vintage clips with reminiscences and insights from the likes of Regis Philbin, Hugh Downs, who served as Paar’s announcer, Dick Cavett, one of his writers, and the Smothers Brothers, who were among the legendary performers who made their earliest TV appearances on the Tonight Show stage (there are hilarious clips featuring Woody Allen, Bill Cosby, and, from 1964, Kermit the Frog, then just a tadpole in local television).

As Paar demonstrated when he quit The Tonight Show after one of his jokes was censored, anything could happen. In one hilarious clip, he fouls up a Goulet-Judy Garland dut by mixing up their cu cards. Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales observes that, unlike predecessor Steve Allen and successors Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, Jack Parr’s Tonight Show combined “the edge of journalism and sparkle of showbiz.” Then-Sen. John F. Kennedy was one of the first politicians who ventured into this more informal, unpredictable setting. There is amazing footage of gust Richard M. Nixon playing piano. Discs 2 and 3 present the master at work. Disc 2 contains complete monologus and gust interviews with Nixon, the boxer formerly known as Cassius Clay, Liberace, Billy Graham, and Robert Kennedy. Disc 3 offers three complete broadcasts, including a 1964 program with Cosby and Richard Burton (an added bonus is an embedded clip of Burton’s towering performance as Hamlet). Forgive the obvious pun, but to watch Jack in his prime is to see why today’s hosts are just not up to Paar. –Donald Liebenson
